Abstract
Serum CA-125 levels were measured during chemotherapy in 32 patients with ovarian cancer to investigate if the antigen could be used as a prognostic parameter form January, 1987 to December, 1991.
We defined that group I was assigned to 22 patients in whom serum CA-125 levels fell below 35U/ml before fourth course of chemotherapy and group II to 10 patients in whom serum CA-125 levels werenot normalized.
There were significant differences in surgical staging, residual tumors after cytoreductive surgery , the mean progression free survival and the 2-year survival rates between group I and group II. And no differences were found depending on age,
grade,
histology and chemotherapy regimens between two groups.
So we suggested that serum CA-125 level after third course of chemotherapy appears to be a critical predictor of response to therapy and the measurement of serum CA-125 levels during treatment might permit an early change to alternative and
optimal
forms of therapeutic management.
